Beemster – CONO Kaasmakers, the traditional North Holland cheese dairy, aims to be climate-positive across its entire value chain by 2030. As a branded cheese maker and comparatively small player, Beemster has already been pursuing a demanding sustainability policy for many years. In 2002, the artisan cheese plant was the first milk processor in the Netherlands to pay farms a grazing premium, followed by “Caring Dairy”, the sustainability management system for farms in 2008, and with both pioneers in Europe. Since 2020, the cheese dairy has been certified climate neutral.
At Beemster, a step-by-step implementation is planned. The sustainability management system “Caring Dairy” includes 18 areas for farm sustainability. In addition, further sustainable improvement of milk transport, cheese dairy and packaging is planned.
